“David said to himself…” 1 Samuel 27: 1
“Now David said to Achish, ‘If I have found favor with you, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?’ That Day Achish gave Ziklag to him, and it still belongs to the kings of Judah today.” 1 Samuel 27: 5-6
1. The Path That Leads To The Pit
David is reeling under rejection
David is sinking in self pity
David is covered with confusion
2. The Perils in the Pit
“David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites. From ancient times they had been the inhabitants of the region through Shur as far as the land of Egypt. Whenever David attacked the land, he did not leave a single person alive, either man or woman, but he took flocks, herds, donkeys, camels, and clothing. Then he came back to Achish, who inquired, ‘Where did you raid today?’ ” 1 Samuel 27: 8-10
David dishonored God
David disappointed his friends
David delighted the enemy
“So Achish trusted David, thinking, ‘Since he has made himself detestable to his people Israel, he will be my servant forever.” 1 Samuel 27: 12
“Lord, why do You stand so far away? Why do You hide in times of trouble?” Psalm 10:1
“Lord, how long will You continually forget me? How long will You hide Your face from me: How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day? How long will my enemy dominate me?” Psalm 13: 1-2
“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from my deliverance and from my words of groanings?” Psalm 22:1
3. The Path Out of the Pit
The promises of God are certain
"The Lord redeems the life of His servants, and all who take refuge in Him will not be punished.” Psalm 34: 22
The promises of God are conditional
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry for help.” Psalm 34:15
The promises of God are compassionate
"The Lord is near the broken hearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 |
